RIP Carlita, Sherbert, and Greybeard

Eighteen and one-half years ago, in the summer of 1995, the girls that lived on our corner were selling home-grown vegetables from a stand in their front yard.  Al would stop and buy from them pretty much every time he drove past and they were out tending their stand.  They had a nice variety of produce, and we ate a lot of delicious veggies that summer.  One day he came home with a bag of their current harvest – and 2 little kittens.  They had talked Al into taking a couple of their latest litter!  These kittens were wild, it took the girls some time to catch them for Al.  The kittens were both female, and we named them Greystoke and Kitty Carlisle.  Greystoke was a pastel calico with light grey, pale peach, and white markings.  Kitty Carlisle was a regular calico with the traditional black, orange, and white markings.

We were delighted with the antics of these two little sister kittens, and we wanted some more little kittens to play with, so we decided to let Kitty Carlisle have one litter of kittens before we had her fixed.  We had read that a cat’s first litter was usually small – generally only 2 or 3 kittens – rarely 4 at the most.  So when Carlisle got pregnant, we were hoping for the larger amount.  Boy were we surprised when she had Seven kittens!  Diamond and Greybeard were black, Sherbert and Seven were orange and white, Oreo was black and white, Marmoset was tortoiseshell, and Carlita was calico.  Diamond was the first born and Seven was the last.

They grew up, each kitten developed their own personality, and we loved each one more than the next.  Then, about 10 years ago we lost Diamond, about 8 years ago we lost Oreo, and Marmoset left us about 4 years ago.  Then this year we lost Sherbert in the spring, Greybeard in the summer, and Carlita a couple of days ago.  Seven is the only one left from that litter and luckily she is still healthy and doing well.  It was very difficult to lose three of our cats so close together.  But we had lots of great years with them, and they all had a happy and Spoiled life with us.  We also picked up (rescued) five other cats through the years, so we still have plenty of cats to sit on our laps and keep us company.

About sunflowerswank

After working all of my life, I retired in June, 2011. I try to use my extra time to rest, exercise, paint my fingernails, play with my 9 cats, spend time with my husband, Al, and cook healthy and lower fat recipies for us to eat. I try to use as many fruits and vegetables in my menus as I can cram in, sometimes to the complaints of the hubs - LOL! I am also making over some of my old favorites to be heathier with more vegetables in them, and less fat.
