Second Place – Vito’s in Modesto
The original Vito’s is in Turlock, by the University, and it’s where my co-workers and I always had our celebration lunches. It is close enough to walk to, and the food is great. It’s traditional Italian, and the pastas, salads, pizzas, and sandwiches are always good, and you get french fries with the sandwiches.
This owner opened up a second restaurant in downtown Modesto with a partner about 6 years ago where Oceana used to be – you can still see the fish embossed on the floor in the bar. Then a couple of years ago, the owners split up the restaurants, and the Modesto one is now independent. The food is still basically Italian, but now also has a “California Fresh” touch to it. The last two times that I ate there I had the grilled chicken salad, and it was fabulous. I probably won’t eat anything else there, now.
But this is about the bread, and it is wonderful. They kept the same type of bread that the Turlock place has. It is always fresh and hot, and has lots of herbs on it for flavor. And they keep bringing more out if you eat it all – and that happens a lot. I know people who eat here just because of the bread. The only reason that I didn’t include the Turlock Vito’s in my list is because they are pretty much identical, and I haven’t been to the Turlock Vito’s for a long time. I will be going back to the Modesto one, for the chicken salad, and for a special treat, the carrot cake!
