Last spring we watched while our neighbor turned the pasture across the street from us into a corn field. He used humongous farm machinery and after about a week of plowing and working the field and raising dust, it was finally finished. As it turned out, he had planted corn. We watched it grow all summer long as it got taller and taller and the tassels came out on the tops. Then yesterday, he harvested it. This was an amazing thing to watch. He cut down the entire field in just a couple of hours, the tractor and the trucks were going really really fast. He used a fabulous machine that cut the corn stalks off close to the ground, and then ground them up and blew them into a truck. There was a second truck following along, and when the first truck was full, it zoomed off, and the second truck took its place. As you can see this also raised quite a bit of dust. And the ground up corn that collects on the hood and roof of the truck blows off and covers any cars that are close to it on the road! This time of year, when I get home, I have to wash the squashed up corn off of my windshield! Sometimes we have stalks of corn growing in our yard from corn that has blown off of these trucks.
